I Do Something Now

Just in the past few weeks, since I’ve decided to publish this blog, two young women in my area have lost their husbands tragically and suddenly.  I’m not sure if I really paid attention before my own loss to the other people who were suffering.  I think I just thought, “Thank goodness it wasn’t us!” And put a sympathy card in the mail.

It’s all different now.  I feel sad for them, of course, but now I have an action plan. I make a mental list of what they are going to need.  What did people do for me that really helped.  What can I do to help?  I just feel called to be available to them, too.  To let them know that I’m going through it and they are not alone.

When the funeral is over, the family has gone home, friends have gotten back to their own lives, I will help fill the empty spaces.

You are not alone.

I was happily married for almost 24 years. My husband and I had were raising two children. Shortly before our 24th anniversary, Tom died suddenly of heart attack. My world stopped. With kids (ages 16 and 13) there isn't the luxury of mourning at my own pace. I had to roll up my sleeves and help each with their own grief all the while managing mine. It is very hard. I am sad that some of you may have found this blog as you are trying to navigate your own traumatic event. Let me be here for you. Grief is fickle. Just when you think you are strong enough to manage a second, a minute, an hour, Grief changes her mind and punches you in the gut. You are not alone. I'm going through it, too. I am here for you.
