Date Nights With Maggie

Somehow it has worked out that Maggie is now my Saturday night date. It kind of happened accidentally. Alex is normally busy on Saturday night and I think I just wanted to keep Maggie busy. She doesn’t have her license and so she’s stuck with me- we might as well have a little fun!

Anyway, our little outings turned into, “Let’s get dressed up and go somewhere nice!” So that’s what we do now and we have so much fun. She’s very observant and we like to guess the stories of the people around us.

Someone asked me where she and I ate last night.  I told them and they were surprised that I took her to that nice of a place.  They were a little judgey.

I reminded them that my children’s father died.  If they ask to go to the most expensive restaurant in town, we will go.  They want to be with ME.  I want to be with them.  And we will be together over an expensive meal whenever we want to.

It just turns out it’s almost every Saturday night!

I was happily married for almost 24 years. My husband and I had were raising two children. Shortly before our 24th anniversary, Tom died suddenly of heart attack. My world stopped. With kids (ages 16 and 13) there isn't the luxury of mourning at my own pace. I had to roll up my sleeves and help each with their own grief all the while managing mine. It is very hard. I am sad that some of you may have found this blog as you are trying to navigate your own traumatic event. Let me be here for you. Grief is fickle. Just when you think you are strong enough to manage a second, a minute, an hour, Grief changes her mind and punches you in the gut. You are not alone. I'm going through it, too. I am here for you.
