Why Do I Play Tennis?

I’m not very good

Every now and then I make a good shot and it surprises the hell out of me.

People are happy for me when I do something right, and tell me it’s okay when I screw up.

So, why do I play tennis?

Because their words of encouragement last me for the rest of the day, sometimes for a couple of days.

When I’m fucking up this whole widow/single parent thing, somehow I hear a whisper;

“Good job, you almost got it!”. Or “It’s okay, you tried!”. Or “Take a step up, so you’re ready next time!”

When I’m having a good day at home and I feel happy and the kids are happy, important decisions were made or tasks completed I hear;

“You’re there, you’re there—Yay!!”, or “Woohoo! We won!”  Or “Great Job!”

Somehow it all translates to the rest of my day, and the words get repeated silently whenever I need to hear them.

“We know for a fact that our bodies store trauma.  We also know that movement is critical to the healing process.”  – Michelle,OneFitWidow

And movement combined with words of encouragement are day – no, life changing.

I was happily married for almost 24 years. My husband and I had were raising two children. Shortly before our 24th anniversary, Tom died suddenly of heart attack. My world stopped. With kids (ages 16 and 13) there isn't the luxury of mourning at my own pace. I had to roll up my sleeves and help each with their own grief all the while managing mine. It is very hard. I am sad that some of you may have found this blog as you are trying to navigate your own traumatic event. Let me be here for you. Grief is fickle. Just when you think you are strong enough to manage a second, a minute, an hour, Grief changes her mind and punches you in the gut. You are not alone. I'm going through it, too. I am here for you.
