Am I Okay?

Why do you ask?

Because I lost a limb?

Because my vision is blurry?

Because my heart hurts constantly?

Because I have unexplained pain in one

leg?

Because no sleep is enough?

Because my voice is hoarse now for no reason?

Am I okay?  Yes, because this is all permanent, but temporary.

And my kids need me and for that I am grateful.

And because I have plans with a friend tomorrow.

Because I’m going to play tennis in two days.

And because I am reading a really good book that I can’t wait to snuggle into tonight.

And it’s Taco Night.

So I am permanently not okay, but I am hopeful that the rough edges will smooth out over time and this will seem somewhat temporary in hindsight.

For now I will enjoy the little things until I am able to enjoy more.

And right now the little things are the big things.

I was happily married for almost 24 years. My husband and I had were raising two children. Shortly before our 24th anniversary, Tom died suddenly of heart attack. My world stopped. With kids (ages 16 and 13) there isn't the luxury of mourning at my own pace. I had to roll up my sleeves and help each with their own grief all the while managing mine. It is very hard. I am sad that some of you may have found this blog as you are trying to navigate your own traumatic event. Let me be here for you. Grief is fickle. Just when you think you are strong enough to manage a second, a minute, an hour, Grief changes her mind and punches you in the gut. You are not alone. I'm going through it, too. I am here for you.
